One of the most wonderful experiences daily: Vecernicek. Story telling is a Czech virtue. But playing with children also? The American kids` hit "Sesame Street" also reached Czech television, but under a different name: "Sesame open!". This name change tells more about Czech attitudes than first meets the eye, i think.
Several women reacted on last week`s column: "I also cannot talk with Czech women." Where is the solidarity?
A pub outside of Prague. A young intelligent Czech man says he can`t talk with Czech women - he finds it boring. They may be beautiful, but there is no depth. An evening of men`s talk.
The last two weeks i had two large meetings to facilitate. Centrally in the art of facilitation is the term "power". Thoughts on East-West gender power dynamics.
Last week i traveled with my Czech daughter to my Dutch son. Two observations of children going cross-culture.
Last month Literarny noviny featured a discussion on the issue of home birth. I had the Dutch and the Czech experience. In the Czech hospital we were "not on your own responsibility, but under the responsibility of the State."
Lecture given at the Prague Gender Studies Centre, June 5, 2000.
teaching English in Prague - isms, stereotypes and the sexist tradition of Czech Easter
Many Czech love to see everything that happens around them as driven by ideologies. Even... feminists. They categorize so much that they fail to see how their reasoning exposes itself as a mirror of their own thinking.
Last week i had an intensive court week, that confronted me with a phenomenon in Czech society: a high percentage of lower court judges is female. I don`t think that that is a result of feminism, but rather the contrary... a lack of feminism in this country.
